To the mom who’s been made to feel like a failure

There is nothing more exhausting than being a parent, knowing you carry great responsibility to shape the life and future of your children, their trusting eyes looking to you for answers; and their small hands reaching out to you for comfort, for security.

When you yourself are walking a journey filled with pain, fear and uncertainty; when you are living your life in the shadow of ‘when will the next blow come?’; When you do not know which way to go, and you have young ones looking to you for support, being able to comfort them and give them answers is that much harder.

In this moment, as you read these words, you may be feeling overwhelmed, alone, guilty, embarrassed or even ashamed. You may feel like you are letting your children down. You have been told that you are failing as a mother and you may even believe these words because it is difficult to help your children when you feel like you can’t even help yourself.

Please hear these words.

  • You are NOT alone.
  • You do NOT have to face this journey alone.
  • You are NOT a bad Woman.
  • You are NOT a bad Mother.
  • You did NOT cause the abuse.

Children Learn What They Live

Dorothy Law Nolte, Ph.D.

If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.
If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive.
If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy.
If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.

If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
If children live with tolerance, they learn patience.
If children live with praise, they learn appreciation.
If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.
If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal.
If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.
If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness.

If children live with fairness, they learn justice.
If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect.
If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them.
If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.
